à la manière de... presents six preludes by American composer Clifton Callender, each entering into dialogue with the musical language of a different predecessor. Rather than imitating historical styles, the works transform familiar gestures into a distinctly contemporary voice, exploring how influence, memory, and musical identity continue to shape new creation.
Performed by pianist Minyoung Rho, whose close collaboration with the composer informed the realization of this project, the recording highlights both the individuality of each prelude and the larger architectural arc that connects the cycle. References to Chopin, Bach, Art Tatum, Ruth Crawford Seeger, Franz Liszt, and the combined influences of David Lang, György Ligeti, and Louis Andriessen emerge not as quotations, but as points of departure for an original musical language.
This release marks the first commercial recording of à la manière de..., offering listeners an intimate exploration of musical lineage viewed through a contemporary lens.
