Pianist Minyoung Rho Releases Clifton Callender’s à la manière de... on Manus Label

Manus Label is pleased to announce the release of à la manière de..., performed by pianist Minyoung Rho and composed by American composer and music theorist Clifton Callender.

Completed in 2018 during Callender’s residency at Copland House, à la manière de... is a cycle of six preludes that engages with musical voices from across different eras and traditions. The individual preludes draw inspiration from Bach, Chopin, Liszt, David Lang, Louis Andriessen, György Ligeti, Art Tatum, and Ruth Crawford Seeger.

Rather than functioning as stylistic exercises or imitations, the preludes take elements of these musical languages as points of departure for Callender’s own compositional voice. References to familiar techniques and textures are transformed through intricate rhythmic structures, contrapuntal writing, harmonic tension, and the resonant possibilities of the piano.

In this new recording, Minyoung Rho brings the six contrasting preludes together as a complete cycle, tracing the work’s dialogue between musical history and contemporary expression.

à la manière de... is available worldwide on major streaming platforms beginning August 7, 2026.
